Non sappiamo da dove veniamo. Non sappiamo cosa stiamo facendo. In questo, arte e scienza hanno lo stesso approccio: inventare cose, fare domande. E non cercare per forza una risposta».

Questa affermazione è di Laurie Anderson, sofisticata artista newyokese sulla scena mondiale dalla fine degli anni ’70. Performer, compositrice, poetessa, regista e come lei stessa ama definirsi “una narratrice di storie”, ha collaborato con importanti artisti: lo scrittore William S. Burroughs, il regista Wim Wenders e molti musicisti fra i quali Brian Eno, Peter Gabriel, Philip Glass, Jean-Michel Jarre, Bobby McFerrin, Lou Reed, Dave Stewart, John Zorn. Pioniera della musica elettronica utilizza i suoni come un pittore i colori della sua tavolozza.

L’attrazione per la tecnologia l’ha portata a inventare originali dispositivi che ha usato nelle sue registrazioni e nelle sue performance artistiche. Nel 1977, ha creato un violino con archetto che utilizza un nastro magnetico registrato (invece del crine di cavallo) e una testina magnetica fissata nel ponte. Alla fine degli anni ’90, ha sviluppato il talking stick, un controller MIDI simile a un bastone lungo 180 cm in grado di creare suoni.

Presidente della giuria Venice VR, (selezione di opere in Realtà Virtuale della recente Biennale) ha presentato fuori concorso “To the Moon” ideato e realizzato con l’amico Hsin-Chien Huang, artista multimediale.

Durante i quindici minuti dell’esperienza in VR, lo spettatore viene scaraventato lontano dalla Terra, cammina sulla superficie lunare, scivola fluidamente tra i detriti dello spazio, attraversa la struttura del DNA e viene sollevato e successivamente scagliato dalla cima di una montagna lunare. Un viaggio inedito e imprevedibile, che mescola immagini e simboli storici della mitologia greca con scienza, letteratura, la politica e film di fantascienza.

“Artists and scientists are very similar. We work in the same way: we create things and ask questions. And maybe this is our role in the universe: questioning ourselves. We don’t know why we’re here. We don’t know where we come from. We don’t know what we’re doing. “In this, art and science have the same approach: inventing things, asking questions. And not necessarily trying to find an answer.”
